Essential Driver Training (EDT)
What is Essential Driver Training?
Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory training course that teaches fundamental driving skills to learner car drivers.
It is part of the Road safety Authority graduated driver licensing scheme and is intended to improve road safety, and introduce more awareness and understanding to driving on our roads.
What does EDT involve?
EDT is a course of 12 one-hour lessons.
These lessons are designed to cover certain critical driving skills and improve your practical driving skills.
As you complete each lesson, your Approved Driving Instructor will record your progress in a specially issued logbook.
A Sponsor (experienced driver) is also recommended, who will supervise your driving and practice outside of lessons to gain extra experience.
What do the lessons cover?
Each of the EDT driving lessons has particular objectives for each lesson using the EDT Course Syllabus.
Once the objectives have been covered, practiced and understood by the learner then the next lesson is introduced.
The 12 lessons are titled:
- CAR CONTROLS AND SAFETY CHECKS
- CORRECT POSITIONING
- CHANGING DIRECTION
- PROGRESSION MANAGEMENT
- CORRECT POSITIONING
- ANTICIPATION AND REACTION
- SHARING THE ROAD
- DRIVING SAFELY THROUGH TRAFFIC
- CHANGING DIRECTION (MORE COMPLEX SITUATIONS)
- SPEED MANAGEMENT
- DRIVING CALMLY LESSON
- NIGHT DRIVING
After you finish your EDT course
You may still need additional lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor to improve your driving skills. Additionally, you should practice with your Sponsor as much as possible to get comfortable behind the wheel.
On the day of your driving test, you should bring your completed logbook on the appointed test date, as you may be required to show it to the examiner.
Leigha Andrews offer Driving Assessments, Pretest and Test Car Hire in addition to EDT lessons and Driving Assessments.
